‘One-Size-Fits-All’ Workouts Don’t Work, Here’s Why
Is there such thing as a safe and effective ‘one-size-fits-all’ workout program? We think not. Here’s why and what you can do instead.
There shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to fitness in general. Workout programs should be specific to the person. What works for you and your body might not be suitable for the next guy. Consulting a professional about your specific fitness needs and goals will not only help you achieve your goals faster but will likely help you avoid injury and improve your overall health. One-size-fits-all programs leave too much space for error.
What are 'one-size-fits-all’ workout programs?
A 'one-size-fits-all workout is a generic program with no regard for things like the person's skill level, specific goals, age, etc. You see these types of programs shown in magazines and online. Particularly in this current digital age, with social media and YouTube, workout programs are copied, pasted, and sent to the next person all the time.
The problem with these programs:
Moving your body is better than being sedentary, but again, what works for one person may not be right for you. If someone has certain health risks or a lack of knowledge about exercise, one-size-fits-all programs can be an issue for a handful of reasons, the main ones being:
Injury:
Without the proper training or education, people are more likely to injure themselves while working out. Proper technique is extremely important for avoiding injury. And if someone has health factors to consider, like asthma, for example, their program can be specifically customized for them to not set off an asthma attack.
Wasted time:
You could be missing out on better and faster results without a personalized workout plan. Many times people waste time doing workouts at the gym when they could trade it for another exercise that’s not only more effective but takes less time.
Burn out:
Overdoing it and burning yourself out at the gym is a real thing, even for those who aren’t beginners. Resting and repairing your body is a part of having the proper training or a specialized program that is developed for you.
Finding the right trainer and creating a personalized program:
Developing a safe and effective workout program relies on a handful of factors that are unique to each person. If you truly want results and not an injury or just someone collecting your money, get a customized program designed for you.
A quality personal trainer or coach wants to learn about you. And if they’re not asking you specific questions before putting you into a session or program, they likely don't have your best interest in mind.
When designing a personalized plan, consider discussing these topics with your trainer:
Age
Fitness level
Fitness and health goals
Health history

One-size-fits-all workout programs can’t work for everyone because we are individuals. Our bodies have different needs based on things like our age, health, and more. I highly suggest consulting a professional coach or personal trainer. It can save you time, help you reach your goals quicker, and most importantly, keep you safe! But, in the end, if you do decide to try out a new workout routine, dig a little deeper, and make sure it’s what’s best for you as an individual!
