There are thousands of ways to exercise, so how do we differentiate between a fad and what's optimal for an individual to obtain actual results? Now, let me be more specific. All types of exercise are beneficial and great to do. I am not here to bash other forms of fitness, but instead, I want to inform you based on factual evidence from scientific journal studies. Most exercise will give you some results, but it's like taking a winding road to reach your destination instead of a straight line. If you can bypass all the detours, why not go with the proven path?

So, what are the best exercises to do? The human body was designed to run, jump, push, pull, lift, throw and climb; therefore, your fitness regimen should emulate all of these movements. Most box gyms offer you lots of shiny machines and lines of cardio equipment with TVs to help you through your monotonous routine. If you are sitting down for most of your workout, I hate to break it to you, but that's probably not optimal training.

Optimal training starts with variety. Look at it this way if you eat oranges for every meal, you will eventually develop deficiencies that affect your health. The same goes for exercise; we need to utilize all components of movement and perform exercises through a full range of motion.

Here are four key things to consider for optimal training:

  1.  Work out your big muscle groups.

This means focusing on your legs, back, and chest.

  2.  Utilize the major lifts.

    Squat, deadlift, and bench.

  3.  Free weights as opposed to machines.

Free weights work you through a full range of motion along with recruiting stabilizer muscles.

  4.  HIIT for cardio.

High-intensity intervals are best for burning fat by going at maximal effort to spike your heart rate followed by enough recovery to repeat.

In the end, there is no pill, no magic machine, and no easy way to get real results. The quickest and best results come from a balance of proper nutrition, weight training, and cardio. If you forget one of these components, you can forget optimal results.
